From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Internal Revenue Service said that it will begin a test in Ohio next year of a plan that will allow millions of unmarried taxpayers to file their returns by telephone. Taxpayers will use a Touch-Tone phone to enter their Social Security number, total wages, interest and tax withheld. An IRS computer will tell the taxpayer the amount of any refund or additional tax. The TeleFile option will be available only to people who qualify to file the single-page Form 1040EZ: single, no dependents, total income under $50,000 and all of it in wages except up to $400 of interest.
