BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Ojeda’s Start Might Be Last of Season

Share

Bob Ojeda will be making only his second start in 14 days tonight. It could also be his last start of the season.

“During this time of the year, you really want that chance to go out and do well,” Ojeda said. “I will happily do whatever I am told, whatever it takes to win, no problem. But when you don’t pitch, it does get frustrating.”

Although Ojeda normally would be scheduled to pitch Sunday’s season finale in Candlestick Park against the San Francisco Giants, that spot will probably go to Orel Hershiser, who will have had an extra day’s rest.

Ojeda would probably also not pitch in a playoff game against the Atlanta Braves, which will be played Monday if the teams end the season tied. That spot would probably go to Tim Belcher, who will start Wednesday and has a good career record against the Braves.

If the Dodgers make the playoffs, Ojeda will be a likely choice to move to the bullpen, which will lose left-hander Steve Wilson. Ojeda has a 13-6 career record as a starter against the Pirates.

The Dodgers claimed they had no influence in the ruling by National League President Bill White that lifted Norm Charlton’s seven-game suspension for the three games that the Reds face the Atlanta Braves. “I don’t know how it worked out, I’m just glad it worked out,” said Fred Claire, Dodger vice president. “I didn’t know about the news until somebody dropped it on my desk. But I think there is more logic to this decision.” . . . Tony Fernandez, the San Diego Padres’ shortstop, was a late scratch Monday because of a sore lower back. . . . A playoff game between the Dodgers and Atlanta Braves would start at 7:35 p.m. at Dodger Stadium next Monday. . . . Jeff Hamilton said that he will probably have arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee after the season to remove scar tissue. Hamilton aggravated the knee Saturday and has not fielded grounders since.

Channel 11 has added two of the three Dodger games from San Francisco--Friday night’s and Sunday’s--to its schedule. Presumably, CBS will televise Saturday’s game, although there has been no announcement. . . . Tonight’s game against the Padres will not be televised, but Wednesday’s will be shown on SportsChannel and made available free to subscribers of all of the pay-cable network’s affiliates.
