The city’s Bureau of Sanitation will collect unwanted household chemicals in a “household hazardous waste roundup” at Los Angeles Valley College.

The event will from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 in parking lot B at the college, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys.

Residents are encouraged to bring household cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, paint products, expired medicine, motor oil and other automobile products, said Jackie David, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Sanitation.

“It’s very important to dispose of these items properly,” David said. “If you throw them in the trash or down the sewer, it ends up in the food you eat, the water you drink, or you end up swimming in it.” Dumping the chemicals with regular garbage is illegal.

Household hazardous waste roundups are held periodically throughout the city and are co-sponsored by Unocal Corp., David said. The last two netted 280 tons of household hazardous waste.

The roundup is designed like a drive-through. Residents stay in their cars while hazardous waste specialists unload and separate the unwanted materials.

“We are prepared for a large volume of cars,” David said.
