SAN CLEMENTE : Max Berg Park to Be Renovated
Work is expected to begin next week on a $753,000 project that will put a new face on the city’s oldest park.
Renovation of the 4-acre Max Berg Plaza Park will replace and expand the park’s approximately 10,000-square-foot plaza area. A shelter and picnic tables will be added, and the restrooms, play areas and play equipment will be replaced.
The renovation is expected to take about six months.
City Park Planner John Beck said that the plaza shelter will create an outdoor amphitheater for concerts and that the 6,000-square-foot play area will be divided into a “tot lot” and a youth lot for different age groups.
Beck said four historical water fountains, which are now used as planters, and a former rose garden will also be restored.
The city has been forced to scale back its original plans for the park renovation to reduce the cost, Beck said. Because of the reduction, the city has postponed the installation of a fifth fountain.
Beck said the work will restore pride in the park, which was built in 1927 by city founder Ole Hanson and named for a man who served the city for 35 years.
