$17,600 Bank Deposit Disappears

Share

No one is quite sure how it happened, but a $17,600 night deposit made by a Santa Catalina Island supermarket at the Southern California Bank’s Avalon branch vanished last week, law enforcement officials said.

“It’s a mysterious disappearance,” said detective Bill Webb, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Avalon substation. According to Webb, two Vons Market clerks reported they routinely put the money bag in the bank’s night deposit drop at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Neither the bag nor the money has been seen since.

Bank officials said they never received the deposit. Shortly before noon last Wednesday, a bank clerk realized that the supermarket hadn’t made its daily deposit, a bank official said.

A teller called the store and was told the money had been put in the drop that morning. The bank notified the sheriff’s office.

“Nothing like this has ever happened before,” said John Phillips, the bank manager.
