It’s Goodby Woodland Hills, Hello Calabasas

Residents of a Calabasas neighborhood that had been called Woodland Hills by the U.S. Postal Service will soon have a Calabasas address and ZIP code after voting overwhelmingly to make the change, postal officials said Wednesday.

The change, which will affect 1,066 addresses in the Mulwood section of the city, will take effect in the next few months, after postal officials adjust sorting equipment and reassign carriers to new routes, said Rich Younce, director of postal operations in the San Fernando Valley.

Mail to the Mulwood area--home to three of the city’s five council members--has long been addressed to Woodland Hills 91364 instead of Calabasas 91302. Since Calabasas incorporated in March, Mulwood has been within the city limits and residents complained that the discrepancy in community names and ZIP codes has caused confusion.

Postal officials approved the change in August, but then mailed out a poll to gauge community support. Of the 828 residents who responded, 790 favored changing the ZIP. Younce said the change was approved because it could be done relatively cheaply--a onetime cost of $70,000 to $80,000--and would require no additional carriers.

The affected area is south of the Los Angeles city limits and roughly between Bon Homme Road and Summit to Summit Motorway.
