ANAHEIM : Disneyland-Area Boulevards Detailed

Share

Plans that would transform two city streets near Disneyland into dramatic tree-lined boulevards were unveiled Tuesday night by city consultants.

Their proposals to bring giant palms and wide green canopies to the now-congested Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard are part of an ongoing study to upgrade the city’s commercial/recreation zone surrounding Disneyland.

Fewer than 50 residents attended the meeting at City Hall, which was also intended to get public input as an environmental study of the area continues to be formulated.

The commercial/recreation zone includes the area bounded by Convention Way to the south, Walnut Street to the west and the San Diego Freeway on the north and east.

The city’s preliminary sketches nearly match in design the sizeable landscaping plans included in the Walt Disney Co.’s proposed $3-billion expansion within the zone.

According to the plans, Katella, from the San Diego Freeway to Walnut Street, would be planted with a colonnade of palm trees, while Harbor Boulevard, from Convention Way to the freeway, would be landscaped with “wide canopy” trees along its west side. The plans for Harbor Boulevard would offset the lush landscaping proposal Disney has already outlined for its new Harbor entrance to the park.

Of those residents who addressed the city’s plans, most were concerned about changes that would bring more tourists to the area.
