ANAHEIM : OCWD Loan to Help City Drill Water Well

Share

The city will use a low-interest loan from the Orange County Water District to build a $750,000 well that will pump up to 4,000 gallons of water a minute.

Construction of the well, to be located in Boysen Park on State College Boulevard, was approved by the City Council recently. Work will begin next spring and be completed about a year later, according to Ray Merchant of the city’s Public Utilities Department.

The well will be drilled to 1,500 feet, and the water it produces will require only minimal treatment before use, Merchant said. He explained that nitrates, an unhealthful compound often found in local well water, is not a problem in wells drilled that deep.

To build the well, the city will receive a 15-year loan with an interest rate of 3.5% from the county water district. Banks currently charge cities interest rates of about 7% for long-term loans, Anaheim officials said.

Including interest, the well’s final cost to the city will be $970,420.
