World IN BRIEF : KENYA : Government Says It Will Crush Rally

The single-party government of President Daniel Arap Moi, who has resisted the movement toward multi-party democracy sweeping other African countries, is threatening to violently crush an opposition rally called for Saturday. The government made similar warnings before a banned meeting in July, 1990. Security forces opened fire on demonstrators then, sparking four days of riots in Nairobi and other cities in which more than 20 people died. The opposition leaders are predominantly politicians and lawyers who are out of favor with the government.
