Report Says Taiwan Wants to Buy 6 Subs

TAIPEI, Taiwan —
Taiwan is negotiating to buy six submarines worth $3 billion from the Netherlands, threatening to renew a diplomatic dispute between Beijing and The Hague, the China Times said Wednesday.
The deal would not be finalized until February, 1992, due to strong pressure from China, the newspaper said, quoting unnamed sources.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry declined to comment.
