Bank Job Losses to Continue: About 250,000 of the nation’s 1.6 million banking workers will lose their jobs in the next 10 years as the industry consolidates, including about 60,000 workers in California, according to a major banking study compiled by Andersen Consulting, the Bank Administration Institute and the Arthur Andersen accounting firm. Joel P. Friedman, an Andersen Consulting partner in San Francisco, said job losses in California will be exacerbated by the transfer of credit card and other operations to states where banks find it cheaper to do business. The study also predicted that California’s banking industry could shrink even more, possibly by 30% to 40%.
