From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A Jordanian immigrant was arrested for investigation of selling his daughter into slavery because he allegedly accepted $25,000 for an arranged marriage. The case came to light when the 17-year-old girl objected to having to live with the 20-year-old man who paid for her, said Police Lt. Tom Spivey. After officers took the girl to a shelter, the father, Maosia Abdulghani, 42, protested to police that he was within his rights to arrange his daughter’s marriage for a price. “The father . . . contacted us, and quite upset, explained it was the custom in his country and is perfectly acceptable,” Spivey said. “Of course, we explained that you can’t do that in this country.” Spivey said the father then went to the shelter and was arrested after creating a disturbance. The 20-year-old, identified as Mohammed Hassan, was also to be booked for investigation of slavery, forcible rape and spousal rape, Spivey said.
