The sentence “until only four or five years ago, almost all premature babies and many full-term newborns were operated on without benefit of any anesthetic whatsoever” is totally baseless and irresponsible. Any physician or nurse associated with any neonatal intensive care unit in this country would have provided accurate information regarding anesthesia and the newborn in the last 15 years.

I would like to reassure all patients of infants I have cared for that their children received adequate anesthetic and analgesia for surgical procedures that they underwent as part of their treatment.

I would like to commend Roark on her otherwise excellent article.
