LAGUNA NIGUEL : Road Medians to Get Unifying Landscapes

Share

The Laguna Niguel City Council has agreed to spend about $800,000 to spruce up and create a “unifying theme” in the landscaping on the medians of the city’s roadways.

The council gave a 4-0 preliminary approval to the project this week. Councilman Larry A. Porter was absent.

“This is kind of getting away from the type of landscape design the county had and coming up with a unique design that will clearly indicate to motorists that you are in Laguna Niguel,” City Manager Tim Casey said.

Proposed plans call for a special planting for Crown Valley Parkway, the city’s major roadway, Casey said. Other major streets, from Alicia Parkway to Niguel Road, will be landscaped differently but in a way that will continue the same theme.

Along Crown Valley Parkway, terra-cotta pavers will be placed at the nose of each island, which will include raised planters and a jacaranda “theme tree,” Casey said. Elsewhere throughout the city, medians will be planted with a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees, combined with shrubs and flowers.

Final plans are expected to be studied by the council in November.
