Actress Suzanne Somers, who has written and starred in a television movie about alcoholism, will speak at a free lecture today on the disease and its effect on families.

Somers, whose autobiography “Keeping Secrets” dealt with her family’s struggles with alcoholism, will talk about her personal experiences and recovery as a child of an alcoholic. A television movie based on the 1988 book aired Sunday.

The lecture will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Charter Hospital, 23228 Madero, Mission Viejo. Free copies of Somers’ book will be given to the first 200 people attending the lecture.

“We want to do everything we can as to the effect addictions have on entire families,” said Mary Williams, marketing director for Charter Hospital. “After growing up with an alcoholic father, (Somers’) goal now in her life is to educate people to what goes on in an alcoholic family and to let them know that there is help out there.”

The mental health hospital chain also recently announced its affiliation with the Suzanne Somers Institute, a clinic that aims to halt the cycle of alcoholism across generations.

Somers will be speaking at mental care facilities in the Charter Hospital chain on a regular basis, Williams said.
