World’s Highest Salaries in Zurich, Survey Shows
The highest salaries in the world are earned in Zurich, the steepest rents are charged in Tokyo and the highest cost of living is in Oslo, a study released Saturday said.
New York has the world’s third-highest rents, according to the study by the Union Bank of Switzerland.
Employees in Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city, are paid on average a net $16.25 an hour, the report said.
Salaries in the Swiss city of Geneva and in Luxembourg are the world’s second- and third-highest at $14.7 and $11.50 an hour respectively, said the report, based on information from 48 major cities around the world.
Salaries are lowest in Lagos, Nigeria, where net income averages about 40 cents an hour.
Anyone living in Tokyo can expect to pay an average $10,313 a month in rent for a four-room furnished apartment.
This compares with $6,435 in Hong Kong and $4,265 in New York, the cities with the world’s second- and third-highest rents.
Similar accommodation in the South African city of Johannesburg would cost a mere $599.
Norwegians pay the most for food and other consumer goods.
