From Times Staff and Wire Reports

New violence was reported even while Chancellor Helmut Kohl was condemning attacks against foreigners and urging Germans to remain friendly. The German television network said about two dozen anti-foreigner crimes had been reported in the previous 24 hours, including one in which assailants set fire to a Portuguese restaurant in Hamburg. Some Germans are increasingly unhappy about what they see as Kohl’s weak response to the attacks. About 3,000 protesters marched through Bremen and 2,000 through Munich in the strongest displays yet of German feelings of solidarity with threatened foreigners.
