COUNTY TENNIS ROUNDUP : U.S. Men, Women Reach Finals in Wheelchair World Cup

The U.S. men’s and women’s teams advanced to today’s finals in the World Team Cup wheelchair tennis tournament with victories over Australia Saturday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.

The U.S. men won, 2-0, as Jim Black of Long Beach defeated Mick Connell, 6-4, 7-6, and Randy Snow of Austin, Tex., defeated David Hall, 6-2, 6-0.

The U.S. women won, 2-1. Patty Rollison of Reno, Nev., defeated Susan Twelftree of Australia, 6-1, 6-0, but Nancy Olson of Stony Point, N.Y., lost to Daniela Di Toro, 6-4, 6-2, forcing a doubles playoff. Olson and Rollison defeated Di Toro and Twelftree, 6-1, 6-7, and 6-1.

In today’s finals, the U.S. men will play France, a 2-0 winner over Germany, at 1 p.m. The women will meet Holland, which defeated Israel, 2-1, at 9 a.m.

In the Women’s National 65-75 Hardcourt Championships:

Cheney in Final--Dodo Cheney of Santa Monica defeated Avis Hilfinger of Bloomington, Ill., 6-2, 6-0, to reach the 75 singles final at Laguna Hills Leisure World.

Cheney will play her doubles partner, Sheila Evans of Indianapolis, for the title today at 10:30 a.m.

Cheney and Evans reached the doubles final by defeating Rosemond Hyde of El Centro and Peggy Kerr of Los Angeles, 6-0, 6-0, and will play Lish Dudlay of Los Angeles and Melanie McAleer of Fort Myers, Fla., at 1:30 p.m. today.

June Gay of Fort Myers, Fla., and Elaine Mason of Fresno will play for the 65 singles title at 9 a.m. today. The 65 doubles final will be at noon.

In the men’s Super Senior Tournament, run concurrently with the women’s event, Vincent Fogre of Newport Beach won the 65 singles finals, defeating Art Graybill of Rolling Hills, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
