If Carlos Huerta had to miss an extra-point attempt for the Miami Hurricanes, he picked a good time to do it.

Huerta’s NCAA-record streak of successful point-after kicks ended at 157 Saturday, but No. 2 Miami still breezed past winless Oklahoma State, 40-3, at Miami.

The errant kick, which Huerta pushed to the right, came with the Hurricanes leading 30-0 late in the second quarter.

“I didn’t concentrate like I should have,” Huerta said. “I looked up and I thought there was a penalty on the play, because I couldn’t believe the streak ended.”

The play marked the first time the Cowboys (0-4) stopped Miami (4-0), which scored four touchdowns and a field goal on its first five possessions.

The Hurricanes’ next six possessions produced five turnovers and only three points.

Miami had 520 yards in total offense to top the 500 mark for the fourth consecutive game and never punted. Oklahoma State managed just 156 yards.

Quarterback Gino Torretta completed 20 of 30 passes for 264 yards and one touchdown, a five-yarder to Lamar Thomas. Two of Torretta’s passes were intercepted by Carlos Erving.

The 30-0 score was Oklahoma State’s largest halftime deficit since 1979, when the Cowboys trailed Oklahoma, 31-0.

Showcasing young backfield talent, Miami rushed for a season-high 230 yards. A fourth consecutive drubbing of a team from the southwest served as a tuneup for next Saturday’s showdown against 12th-ranked Penn State.

Sophomore Martin Patton scored on runs of four and two yards, and freshman Donnell Bennett scored from 22 yards out with 1:27 left for the only second-half touchdown.

Wendell Gaines recovered a fumble by Torretta’s at the Miami 31 to set up the Cowboys’ lone score, a 20-yard field goal by Rick Myers.

Huerta kicked field goals of 27 and 29 yards.

No. 19 North Carolina State 28, No. 21 Georgia Tech 21--Geoff Bender’s two-yard keeper with 2:43 left gave the Wolfpack the victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Raleigh, N.C.

Bender, playing in place of injured starter Terry Jordan, who broke his wrist last week against North Carolina, struggled most of the afternoon. He completed 17 of 32 passes for 138 yards and had three passes intercepted.

But Bender led the Wolfpack, 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC, on a 6 1/2-minute, 74-yard drive to the winning touchdown with the help of three penalties against the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-2).

Georgia Tech took a 21-20 lead midway through the third quarter when Willie Clay returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown.

Quarterbacks Chuckie Burnette, Todd Burnett and Mike Thomas completed all 11 of their passes for North Carolina (3-1).

William & Mary (2-3) had 397 yards passing, 324 by quarterback Chris Hakel.

South Carolina 55, East Tennessee State 7--Freshman Brandon Bennett rushed for a school-record 278 yards in 31 carries and scored on runs of 12, 89 and one yard in a nonconference game at Columbia, S.C.

Bennett broke the record of 260 yards set by Jeff Grantz in 1973 against Ohio.

South Carolina is 2-2-1. East Tennessee State is 1-4.

Southern Methodist 31, Tulane 17--Dan Freiburger completed 27 of 36 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns at New Orleans as the Mustangs (1-3) ended the nation’s longest major-college losing streak at 13 games.

Rongea Hill ran for 167 yards and a touchdown on 37 carries and also had six receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Jerome Woods completed 17 of 31 for 152 yards and two touchdowns for Tulane (0-6).
