Readers Speak Out on Reading Aloud

Share

Many people are not aware of a wonderful one-on-one reading program provided by the Los Angeles Public Library system. Twenty-two thousand children have been read to by volunteers from Grandparents and Books (GAB) from July, 1990, to June, 1991. The library grandparents have read in English as well as Spanish, Chinese and Korean.

Grandparents and Books is made up of almost 300 older men and women who read (and are read to) by children from preschool to preteen almost every day all over the city.

The biggest complaint of the volunteers (I am one of them) is that there are not enough children with whom we can share this special experience. The children need us and we need them. Let’s get the word out.
