Fred Strache was appointed Friday as acting vice president of student affairs at Cal State Northridge by James W. Cleary, university president.

Strache, who also will serve as acting dean of students, currently is associate vice president of student programs and executive director of the University Student Union.

He will fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Edmund T. Peckham last month and will serve in his new post through June 30, 1992, Cleary said.

“Fred Strache brings a wealth of experience to the position,” he said. “He is known for his sensitivity to student needs and for promoting cross-cultural understanding.”

Strache’s new responsibilities include overseeing housing, intercollegiate and intramural athletics, campus activities, counseling, disabled and veteran student services, financial aid, student health services, exchange students, student unions and the Associated Students organization.

“The biggest challenge we face is to continue to provide students with the services they need at a time when the state university system is suffering such severe budget cutbacks and limitations,” Strache said.

Strache has more than 30 years of experience in student services. He came to CSUN in 1973.
