Writers Aiding Writers: The Writers Guild Foundation has set up a fund to assist film writers in the Soviet Union after a leading Soviet film writer sent a message describing how writers there helped foil the recent coup attempt and how now, “every moment of our existence becomes a headache. . . . We can do nothing to help the old writers from our guild. We are not able to give them money to buy food, the government stores are empty, one sweater or pair of pants costs three months of their pension.” The guild says only monetary contributions will be solicited because of shipping and distribution problems.
