Council Goes on Record Against ABC Staff Cuts
The Los Angeles City Council went on record Wednesday as being unanimously opposed to Gov. Pete Wilson’s proposed cuts that would reduce the staff of the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control by about 75%. “It’s a staggering cut,” said Councilman Joel Wachs. “The remaining 25% is intended to be left to look at new applications for liquor licenses. As a result, (enforcement of liquor control laws) will be put on hold.”
Wilson’s proposal is part of a budget-cutting plan and is expected to save about $5 million. The move would require about 170 layoffs and an 80% reduction in the number of ABC investigators covering the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.
The resolution will be presented at the California League of Cities Conference this weekend in San Francisco.
