From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The amount of protective ozone in the atmosphere over Antarctica dipped to its lowest level in 13 years of recorded data last Sunday, NASA said. NASA had earlier said that this year’s ozone hole was comparable to those in 1990 and 1989, with the area of depleted ozone stretching for 8 million square miles. The agency blamed a combination of weather and man-made chlorine compounds and other chemicals for the fluctuation. Ozone acts as a shield against solar ultraviolet radiation.
