Torborg Reportedly Agrees to Join Mets

The New York Mets’ brief search for a new manager is over. Jeff Torborg has agreed to become the club’s 13th manager. His appointment will be announced within several days.

Baseball sources indicated as much Wednesday night within hours after Torborg’s meeting with General Manager Al Harazin and Frank Cashen. Harazin acknowledged the meeting, but little else.

He said another meeting was scheduled with the Chicago White Sox manager. Sources said the second meeting has no bearing on Torborg’s appointment; the deal is done.

Contacted at his home in Scarsdale, N.Y., Harazin indicated he and Cashen met for two or three hours with their only acknowledged candidate near Torborg’s Mountainside, N.J., home.

Harazin characterized the meeting as “good” and as “a positive session,” but he would not say whether an offer had been made to Torborg. The sources said Torborg agreed to a multiyear contract.

Torborg could not be reached for comment. His wife said Wednesday that he couldn’t answer telephone calls.

But last week, Torborg, when asked if he would be interested in the Mets’ job, said, “Oh, yeah, sure I’d be interested. It’s my backyard. What more can you say? I’d be foolish not to listen.”
