Brett Hull scored with 29 seconds left in overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers Thursday night at St. Louis.

Paul Cavallini had two goals and the game-winning assist as the Blues overcame a two-goal deficit to gain their first victory of the season after two losses.

The Oilers had a 2-0 lead with 12:23 left in the game, and backup goalie Peter Ing was headed for his second career shutout when Cavallini scored the first of his two power-play goals.

Hull scored the game-winner off the rebound of a shot by Cavallini.

Cavallini tied the score with 6:05 left, knocking in the rebound of a hard shot by Adam Oates from the right faceoff circle.

Montreal 4, Detroit 1--An opening-night crowd at Detroit, a laser-light show and nostalgic sweaters couldn’t make up for the Red Wings’ mistake-prone defense, as Denis Savard and Guy Carbonneau scored breakaway goals in the third period to lead the Canadiens.

Savard, benched by Canadien Coach Pat Burns after a glaring mistake in the first period, broke a 1-1 tie at 1:11 of the third period, skating around rookie Vladimir Konstantinov and sliding the puck between the pads of goalie Tim Cheveldae for his first goal.

Minnesota 3, Quebec 2--Stewart Gavin, who has spent most of his three-plus seasons with the North Stars as a defensive specialist, scored two rebound goals to lead Minnesota at Bloomington, Minn.

In 38 regular-season games last season, Gavin had a total of four goals and four assists. He had three goals and 10 assists in 21 playoff games.

Chicago 7, Vancouver 6--Steve Larmer scored three goals at Chicago as the Blackhawks, who had the best regular-season record in the NHL last season, won for the first time this season.

Playing in his 724th consecutive game, Larmer scored in the first period, then twice during a five-goal second period to rally the Blackhawks from a 3-1 deficit. His hat trick was the sixth of his career.

The line of Larmer, Jeremy Roenick and Michel Goulet accounted for 12 points. Roenick had a career-high five points on a goal and four assists, and Goulet chipped in with a goal and three assists.

Pittsburgh 6, Philadelphia 3--Larry Murphy scored two goals as the Penguins won at Philadelphia.

Paul Coffey broke a 2-2 tie at 6:08 of the second period, scoring his first goal of the season on a feed from Jaromir Jagr.

The Penguins went ahead, 4-2, at 7:40 of the final period on a power play. Murphy centered a pass through the crease that went in off the skates of Philadelphia defenseman Steve Duchesne. Murphy was given credit for the score.

Winnipeg 5, San Jose 4--Bryan Erickson scored two third-period goals to give the Jets a victory at Daly City and keep the Sharks, the NHL’s newest franchise, from winning two in a row. The Sharks upset Calgary, 4-3, Tuesday night for their first victory.
