SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : NFL, Baseball Head to Head

The NFL and baseball’s playoffs are the main competitors for the weekend sports television audience, while college football and hockey also figure to attract viewers today.

Pro Football: The Raiders-Seattle Seahawks game may not be Sunday’s best matchup, but it is the last game of the day, airing at 4:30 p.m. on KCAL Channel 9 and cable’s Turner Network Television. Sunday’s NFL action will begin at 10 a.m. when the undefeated New Orleans Saints (5-0) visit the Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) on Channels 2 and 8. The Kansas City Chiefs (4-2), a game ahead of the Raiders and Seahawks in the AFC West, will play host to the Miami Dolphins (3-3) at 1 p.m. on Channels 4 and 36.

Baseball Playoffs: The National League championship series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves will resume at noon today with Game 3 on Channels 2 and 8. Game 4 is set for 5:30 p.m. Sunday on the same stations. Game 4 of the Minnesota Twins-Toronto Blue Jays American League championship series will start today at 5:30 p.m. on Channels 2 and 8. Game 5 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday on the same stations.

College Football: There are five telecasts today involving teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, topped by Miami (Fla.) (No. 2) playing host to Penn State (No. 9) at 9 a.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42. Of local interest, USC will visit Washington State at 3:30 p.m. on Prime Ticket. Prime Ticket will also carry the UCLA-Arizona game at 7 p.m. and a delayed telecast of the San Diego State-New Mexico game at 10:30 p.m.

Hockey: The Kings will play the Winnipeg Jets for the second time in eight days at 7:30 p.m. tonight on KTLA Channel 5.
