Second-seeded Boris Becker and fourth-seeded Andre Agassi each lost their quarterfinal matches Friday in the Seiko Super tournament at Tokyo.

Becker, playing in his first tournament since his third-round loss at the U.S. Open, was defeated by seventh-seeded Derrick Rostagno, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3.

“I was good, but I just had an opponent who played extremely well,” said Becker, who was hindered by a thigh injury during the U.S. Open. “If I play a couple of tournaments in a row, I’ll be much better.”

Sixth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia beat Agassi, 6-3, 6-4. Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden swept eighth-seeded Michael Chang, 6-2, 6-2, and third-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated fifth-seeded David Wheaton, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

Ivanisevic, who had 15 aces, beat Agassi for the second time in two weeks.

In today’s semifinals, Edberg meets Ivanisevic, and Lendl plays Rostagno.

Anders Jarryd of Sweden upset Michael Stich, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), to reach the quarterfinals of a $300,000 Assn. of Tennis Professionals tournament at Berlin.

“He was serving worse than usual and didn’t seem especially concentrated on the court,” Jarryd said of Stich, who repeatedly said “super, Michael” sarcastically to himself, threw his racket and complained throughout the match that the ball fetchers were too slow.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf needed only 35 minutes to beat 16-year-old qualifier Marketa Kochta, 6-2, 6-1, and reach the semifinals of the European Indoors tournament at Zurich, Switzerland.

Also advancing to the semifinals was fifth-seeded Helena Sukova, who upset No. 3 Jana Novotna, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
