Todd Krygier, Dimitri Khristich and Mike Ridley scored first-period goals within a span of 4 minutes 21 seconds as the Washington Capitals continued their best start ever with a 5-1 victory over the New York Rangers Friday night.

Goalie Mike Liut posted his third victory in three starts for the Capitals, who improved to 4-0 and equaled a 1988 feat by winning their first three home games. Washington took sole possession of first place in the Patrick Division.

Dale Hunter put the Capitals ahead, 4-0, on a power-play goal 1:02 into the second period when his pass deflected off Ranger defenseman David Shaw past goalie Mike Richter. Darren Turcotte and Mike Pivonka also scored second-period goals for the Capitals.
