The Judgment on ‘T2’

Regarding “How They Did That,” Charles Solomon’s report on the special effects in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (Sept. 22):
Solomon seems to miss the point with his description of the genesis of CGI, computer-generated imagery. The article downplays the significance of “Tron” and the other innovative films that started it all, clearly favoring Industrial Light & Magic, the “water weenie” and the endless hype of “Terminator 2.”
The creative and dedicated people who made the first CGI films were the ones braving the uncharted territory that the second generation--ILM and Pacific Data Images--now work in day to day. Belittling their efforts is akin to criticizing the Wright brothers for not providing in-flight movies.
As much as the fine folks at ILM would like to have their name become synonymous with CGI, in a sense all they did was update the software.
