These Are Not Cartoons, Kids, ABC Warns Its Saturday Viewers
Children’s cartoons yielded to another day of graphic sexual testimony Saturday as the three major networks resumed live coverage of the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.
But ABC anchorman Peter Jennings, mindful of young viewers when the second day of hearings began shortly after 7 a.m. PDT, prefaced them with a primer for children on what it was all about.
He delicately alluded to the graphic descriptions on Friday that were part of what law professor Anita Faye Hill called sexual harassment by Thomas, her ex-boss, who denies her accusations.
Warning that “you may hear some not very nice language,” Jennings told young viewers that the two “have a very painful disagreement about some things the woman says the man did to her when they were working together.”
ABC, CBS and NBC said Saturday that they do not plan full live coverage today.
CNN has said it will provide extensive live coverage, while PBS, C-SPAN and cable’s new Court TV network are airing them live gavel-to-gavel.
