Gay Rights Activists Block Mall Vehicle Exits

Share

Gay rights activists blocked vehicle exits at the Beverly Center for about half an hour Sunday after a run-in between a protester and mall security officers.

The protesters, who were demonstrating against Gov. Pete Wilson’s veto of a bill that would have banned job discrimination against homosexuals, said they blocked the exits after one of them was detained by guards.

“Let Rocky go,” the protesters chanted, referring to the blind demonstrator they said had been detained.

Los Angeles police said there had been a minor altercation between a security guard and a demonstrator, but could not confirm that a protester had been detained.

Sgt. Daniel Mulrenin said between 200 and 300 demonstrators surrounded the shopping center and blocked the vehicle exits. No one was arrested. Beverly Center officials could not be reached for comment.
