Los Angeles Times Hires Outside Custodial Firm: In a move that it said would save $2.5 million a year, The Times is hiring an outside contractor, American Building Maintenance Co., to provide custodial services at all four Times plants. The Times said that the switch, effective next month, will eliminate about 140 full-time positions at the newspaper but that there would be no layoffs. Those whose jobs are eliminated are being offered a choice of being retrained to fill other full-time jobs at The Times, or working for ABM, or accepting an enhanced voluntary separation package, a Times spokeswoman said.
