Taylor’s Wedding

Share

I was sorry to see The Times feature a front-page color photo of some jerk in a paraplane buzzing Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding as a part of the crass air assault by the tabloids (Oct. 7). The tabloidization of the entire press is an appalling new form of pollution. It’s dismaying that The Times featured a story about the press frenzy and idiotic speculations about the wedding on the front page, but stuck the report by Liz Smith, an actual wedding guest, inside.

If the public were as mean-spirited and supercilious as the press, Taylor would not still be the object of such fascination. It’s beyond the press that like all of the greatest stars, Taylor endures because of her talent and the unique personal qualities that cause millions to truly care about her.
