Cable TV Regulation Gains Momentum: Two congressmen introduced a bill to re-regulate cable television and curb some of the industry’s business practices. Rep. Dennis Eckart (D-Ohio) and Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.) proposed legislation that would not only restore to franchise authorities the ability to set cable TV rates but also would forbid cable networks from entering exclusive contracts with local cable operators. The Senate Commerce Committee endorsed a cable re-regulation bill earlier this year, but the legislation has not come to the Senate floor.
