A state Department of Education committee has selected a La Habra teacher as one of eight semifinalists for 1992 California Teacher of the Year.

Maria Asucena Vigil, who teaches kindergarten at Las Lomas School, was named by a 12-member committee appointed by State Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig. There were 57 teachers nominated.

“Adjectives like outstanding , exceptional and superb flow abundantly through the reviews of our Teacher of the Year nominees,” Honig said. “Reading them inspires a special respect and admiration for our nation’s unsung heroes and heroines--teachers.”

Like the other semifinalists, Vigil will be evaluated by the committee before final selection is made. Vigil has already been selected as Orange County’s Teacher of the Year. Vigil, a 20-year-teaching veteran, instructs students who are mostly limited in English skills.

“From the moment, Maria picks up her students from the playground to the time they reach the classroom, the children are learning,” said Mary Jo Anderson, principal at Las Lomas. “They are singing alphabet songs and counting numbers. She’s a magnificent teacher and a truly lovely lady.”
