BEIRUT —
A U.N. envoy left Lebanon on Wednesday after talks with kidnapers demanding protection against retaliation once all their Western hostages are freed, Muslim sources said.
They said that Giandomenico Picco, U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar’s chief mediator in the hostage crisis, returned to the Syrian capital of Damascus after meeting the kidnapers Tuesday.
The sources had no details of Picco’s talks, and it was unclear whether they would lead to a breakthrough in the hostage crisis.
