Treats Sans Sweets

Halloween treats don’t need to be sweet. Almost any little trinket or party favor will please the costumed cats, mermaids and fairy princesses that come knocking at your door on All Hallows’ Eve.

Jan Kirshner and Patrick Kelly of H-K Special Events, a professional party planning organization, offer the following alternatives to candy for Halloween treats:

* Stickers: The Wildlife Federation and other nonprofit organizations send charming stickers to donors. Stationery stores also sell brightly colored stickers that kids love.

* Coins: The shinier, the better. You can get rolls of pennies from your local bank.

* Stationery: Wholesale stationers sell colored pencils, pens, chalk and notebooks.

* Barrettes: These inexpensive hair accessories can be purchased at your local drugstore.

* Junk Jewelry: Children’s jewelry can cost as little as 50 cents. Try a dime store, thrift shop or vendor who sells to the flea market crowd.

* Books and Magazines: Don’t junk your kids’ comics if they’re still in good condition; they make a great treat. Check out bookstores that sell used paperbacks and magazines. Don’t forget friends who work in publishing houses and libraries.

* Party Favors: Trinkets and such that are economical and unusual. Dime stores and card shops are your best bet.

* Novelties: These can include trading cards, small balls and tops.
