Disney Sings Praises of AIDS Foundation

Pediatric AIDS Foundation received a check for more than $2 million from Frank Wells, president and CEO of the Walt Disney Co. Monday at Disney Studios. That amount represents four months’ sales of the gold album, “For Our Children,” featuring songs by Bob Dylan, Little Richard, Barbra Streisand and other performers, all of whom donated their time. “ ‘For Our Children’ has made it possible for Pediatric AIDS Foundation to fund much of the urgently needed research in the battle against pediatric AIDS,” said Elizabeth Glaser, co-founder of the organization.

* Los Angeles Boy Scout Council will receive $300,000, proceeds of the annual Cushman Realty Boy Scout Golf Classic held Sept. 30 at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier. The tournament, followed by a reception and dinner, was sponsored by Cushman Realty Corp. and chaired by Brian Ulf, William Puget and Saturo Jo.

* Senior Health and Peer Counseling has received $185,000 to support mental and physical health services for seniors. The announcement came at a Sept. 22 brunch honoring Patrons of Senior Health at Maple Drive Restaurant in Beverly Hills. The newly formed group of donors annually contributes a minimum of $1,000 to benefit the organization.

* American Heart Assn. Thanks to host Earvin (Magic) Johnson, celebrities and more than 140 business leaders raised $200,000 for heart research and education programs to benefit Los Angeles area residents. The occasion was the annual Magic’s Golf Classic, held at the Riviera Club on Sept. 16.

* Sunshine Mission/Casa de Rosas, an emergency shelter and permanent low-cost housing program for women, raised $24,500 at the Sept. 17 “Twenty-Seven Chairs” event, including a live auction conducted by Robert Berman. The benefit was held at the Daniel Saxon Gallery. Proceeds will fund operation of the shelter, one of L.A.’s oldest shelters for women, and development of an on-site art program for residents.

* Julia Ann Singer Center will receive more than $150,000, net proceeds raised at its 75th anniversary celebration at the Beverly Hilton Sept. 11. More than 550 guests enjoyed the luncheon and fashion show for the center, which provides treatment for abused, emotionally disturbed and learning disabled children and families.

* St. John’s Hospital and Health Center’s Sept. 6 “Day at the Races” netted $8,000 for the Child Study Center. The event was hosted by St. John’s Hope Guild, an auxiliary group of women who have been supporting the center for 40 years. Joan Conca is guild president.

* Westchester High School’s Academic Booster Club has received a $10,000 donation from the William H. Hannon Foundation. The money will help purchase academic jackets and IBM computers.
