SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : World Series Gets Under Way Today

A busy sports television weekend will find the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins opening the 88th World Series, California and Washington playing for first place in the Pacific 10 conference and Magic Johnson and the Lakers spreading good will in Paris for the National Basketball Assn.

* World Series: The first pitch by the Twins’ Jack Morris is scheduled for 5:29 p.m. today on CBS (Channels 2 and 8), with pregame coverage beginning at 5. The first pitch for Sunday’s second game is scheduled for 5:40 p.m., with the pregame show again starting at 5.

* College Football: The game of the day will match the Washington Huskies (No. 3) and the California Bears (No. 7), both 5-0, at 12:30 p.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42. In a USC-UCLA doubleheader on Prime Ticket, the Trojans will play the Stanford Cardinal at 3:30 p.m., followed by the Bruins against the Oregon State Beavers at 7. In other games involving teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, Tennessee (No. 8) will visit Alabama (No. 14) at 9 a.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42; Michigan (No. 4) will play host to Indiana at 9:30 a.m.; Notre Dame (No. 5) will take on Air Force at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN, and in a delayed telecast airing at 10:30 p.m. on SportsChannel, Florida (No. 6) will meet Northern Illinois.

* Pro Football: With the Raiders failing to sell out their game against the Rams at the Coliseum prior to the 72-hour deadline, fans in most of Southern California will see the Detroit Lions-San Francisco 49ers NFC matchup on KCBS Channel 2 at 1 p.m. The Houston Oilers will play the Miami Dolphins at 10 a.m. on KNBC Channel 4.

* Other Sports: 1992 U.S. Olympic team member Magic Johnson and the Lakers will continue international play in the McDonald’s Open at 12:30 p.m. today on Channels 4, 36 and 39. In pro hockey, the Kings will meet the Minnesota North Stars tonight at 7:30 p.m. on KTLA Channel 5.
