President Bush, resisting calls for immediate economic retaliation against Taiwan and South Korea, said he would give them three more months to show why they should not face trade sanctions for illegal drift-net fishing. The delay drew sharp criticism from members of Congress who are pushing legislation that would mandate sanctions against drift-net violators. Critics say drift nets, extending as far as 30 miles, indiscriminately kill all marine life in their path.
