Share

Two interceptions by senior Eric Voss and three field goals by David Abbott sparked host Valley Christian to a 9-0 Olympic League victory over Whittier Christian in the league opener for both teams Friday in Cerritos.

After Abbott kicked a 25-yard field goal with 3 minutes 15 seconds left to put the Crusaders up, 9-0, the Heralds drove down the field and threatened to score. But Voss’ interception with 1:48 left put the game away.

The Crusaders (4-2, 1-0) also got a strong performance from running back Corey Peters, who increased his string of consecutive 100-yard games to six. Peters had 151 yards in 31 carries and has 802 yards for the season.

Peters fumbled on the game’s first play from scrimmage to give the Heralds the ball deep in Crusader territory. But Whittier Christian (4-2, 1-0) couldn’t move the ball and missed a 40-yard field goal attempt.

Abbott put the Crusaders ahead on their next possession with a 33-yard field goal. He added a 30-yarder in the third quarter.
