Fernandez, acquired from Toronto in the middle of a multiyear contract, has until 15 days after the World Series to demand a trade.

If Fernandez requests a trade, the Padres would either have to deal him or modify his contract to his satisfaction. He is scheduled to receive $2.1 million plus a $10,000 bonus for accepting the option.
