Some of the exotic creatures will be content to pose and preen, displaying their vibrant blue, green and scarlet colors.

But others can be expected to show off, zooming around on remote-control vehicles or bestowing kisses on command. And at least a few will no doubt be in a mood to sound off with a few choice words.

It will happen today in Lawndale, as hundreds of lovebirds, parrots, cockatiels and other exotic birds--and their owners--flock to the Southern California Finch and Hookbill Show at the Alondra Park Community Building. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1.

“This is for anyone who wants to learn about birds or is fascinated by birds,” show manager Sharyn Bolivar said.

“We want to let people know (birds) can be very affectionate animals and will do anything for attention. They love to be handled and cuddled, and have a complete personality.”

Novice bird fanciers will be able to ask questions of experts and buy birds or bird supplies from various vendors. And, Bolivar said, even an experienced collector “usually sees a bird or two” he hasn’t seen before.

Anyone with a bird who talks or does tricks may enter the pet in a 1 p.m. contest. Said Bolivar, “Some of the birds have a very colorful vocabulary, so you’re liable to hear a little profanity once in a while.”

Joe Kratwohl and his bird act from the Las Vegas Tropicana Hotel will entertain at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. He will spotlight the skills of birds of prey, including the rare Bateleur eagle. His show also includes a macaw that flies through a fiery hoop.

The Alondra Park Community Building is at 3850 Manhattan Beach Blvd.
