TEMPE, Ariz. — Drew Bledsoe directed a pair of second-quarter touchdown drives, capping the second with a 36-yard scoring pass play to C.J. Davis, as Washington State upset No. 25 Arizona State, 17-3, Saturday night.
Shaumbe Wright-Fair, who gained 124 yards in 26 carries, scored on a one-yard run to make it 10-0.
Cougar defensive back Torey Hunter intercepted three Kurt Lasher passes in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.
It was the first victory for the Cougars over Arizona State after five losses and a tie.
The last Washington State victory in the series was a 31-21 win in 1983.
The loss was a blow to the Rose Bowl hopes of Arizona State (4-2, 2-1), which sacked Bledsoe seven times and intercepted him twice without slowing him down.
For Washington State (3-4, 2-2), the takeaways were more strategic.
In addition to Hunter’s key interceptions, Anthony Prior recovered a fumble on the Washington State four-yard line late in the game to keep the Sun Devils from scoring a touchdown.
This was second game this season in which Arizona State has gone without a touchdown. The first time was in an 18-9 loss to Nebraska.
Jason Hanson gave the Cougars their initial lead with a 49-yard field goal.
Arizona State’s Mike Richey kicked a 38-yard field goal in the third quarter.
