IRVINE : Police Seek Alcohol Ban at City Parks
- Share via
City parks have always been a place where a family can spread out a blanket, pass around the sandwiches and soft drinks and uncork a chilled bottle of white wine for the adults. But under a law to be considered Tuesday by the City Council, anyone wanting to swig a beer or nurse a glass of wine would need a city permit.
The city’s leniency in having no law against drinking alcoholic beverages at parks has led to “inappropriate behavior by individuals or groups,” according to a report to the council from Police Chief Leo Peart.
Peart will ask the council to bar alcoholic beverages from parks unless those who indulge have a permit.
Police have received an increasing number of complaints about juveniles and adults drinking at parks.
