MOORPARK : Helicopter’s Ribbon Drop Near School Marks Anti-Drug Drive

A Sheriff’s Department helicopter dropped more than 700 bright red ribbons on park grounds next to Mountain Meadows Elementary School in Moorpark on Monday in honor of a weeklong anti-drug campaign.

Hundreds of Mountain Meadows students, who had gathered at North Meadow Park next to the school in an assembly in honor of Red Ribbon Week, were dismissed from class to tie the ribbons to the fence surrounding the school, said kindergarten teacher Laurie Varney.

Schools across Ventura County are being adorned with ribbons this week to mark Red Ribbon Week.

The event, started six years ago when U.S. Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers, is intended to encourage students not to take drugs or alcohol.

At Mountain Meadows, the PTA purchased the ribbons and parents tied them into bows to be attached to the fence, Varney said.

At the assembly, Moorpark Supt. Tom Duffy, Sheriff’s Department spokesmen and other school and city officials talked to students about staying away from drugs.
