4th Medfly Discovery in October Reported

Share

An adult male Mediterranean fruit fly has been trapped near the Koreatown area of Los Angeles, bringing to four the number of Medflies discovered this month, county agricultural officials said Tuesday.

The fourth fly was trapped Monday in a persimmon tree in the 1500 block of Van Ness Street, about one-quarter mile south of a third Medfly trapped on Sunday, officials said. All of the Medflies have been found within the quarantine area established by the state after the discovery of a mated female fly Oct. 7.

Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner Leon Spaugy said Tuesday that the latest discovery supports the theory that the infestation is “small and localized.” He said no aerial spraying of malathion bait is being considered. Ground spraying near the 1500 block of 5th Avenue--where the third fly was trapped Sunday--is scheduled to begin today in an area bounded by Pico Boulevard, 3rd Avenue, Venice Boulevard and Norton Avenue.
