Criminal charges have been filed against two men Glendale police say are responsible for a three-month garage burglary spree involving more than 30 victims.

The burglars typically used bolt cutters to remove padlocks before stealing power tools, bicycles and other property from residential garages in southeast Glendale and the city’s Rossmoyne neighborhood, police said.

Investigators got their first break in the case on July 24, when two garage burglars were spotted and chased by a Glendale resident. The resident pursued the intruders by car into a Los Angeles cul-de-sac, but fled when one of the men threatened him with a crowbar, police said.

The break-ins continued until last Friday, when a man was seen cutting a lock on a garage in the 400 block of South Verdugo Road. Officers responded to a call and arrested Ramon Corella, 39, of Los Angeles, who was carrying bolt cutters in a red backpack. His suspected partner, Raul Carmelo Rodriguez, 55, also of Los Angeles, was arrested as he waited nearby in a white Volkswagen Rabbit that matched the description of one seen near some of the earlier burglaries, police said.

Investigators said they recovered stolen tools and other property from the car and the suspects’ Hollywood apartment.

“We’re very pleased,” said Glendale burglary Detective Steve Darensbourg. “We estimate we have in excess of 30 victims. We still have a lot of property to identify. We’re going to lay all the property out, itemize it and get in touch with all of our victims and see if they can identify and reclaim it.”

He said many of the recovered items were engraved with the owner’s name or driver’s license number, making them easy to trace. But Darensbourg said he believes that before the men were arrested, they sold many items, including 30 to 40 bicycles.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Lawrence McGrail on Tuesday filed burglary charges against Corella and Rodriguez in connection with four of the break-ins. Corella also was charged with one count of robbery in the July 24 confrontation with the resident.

McGrail said he selected these cases because they will be the easiest to prove. Because of maximum prison term rules, additional counts would not necessarily lead to longer sentences upon conviction, he said.

Police “can clear a whole lot of cases, but they didn’t need to prove anything more than what I filed,” the prosecutor said.

Corella and Rodriguez pleaded not guilty Tuesday before Glendale Municipal Judge Joseph DeVanon and were ordered to appear at a Nov. 5 preliminary hearing. The men remain in Los Angeles County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail each.
