Paramount : City Gets Award for Its Role in New Apartment Project

Share

Paramount has won a National League of Cities award for “its effort to bring high-quality multifamily housing into an area blighted by gang activity and crime.”

The city won the 1991 Urban Enrichment Award for the 306-unit Century Place apartment complex at 13801 Paramount Blvd. Twenty percent of the units are for low- and moderate-income residents.

The National League of Cities lauded the city for granting density variances to Jan Development Co. of Beverly Hills for the project, which was completed earlier this year. The variances reduced land costs in exchange for providing low- and moderate-income housing and high-quality construction, officials said. The city also helped the developer secure financing.

Century Place is on the border of one of Paramount’s gang-plagued neighborhoods. Each apartment features a fireplace and balcony. The complex has a community center with a swimming pool and gymnasium, as well as underground parking.

The city will formally receive the award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize, Dec. 13 during the National League of Cities convention in Las Vegas.
